The Pentecost Experience-It’s All About Evangelization and Mission!

Empowered by the Holy Spirit to Evangelize

 pentecost

“The Holy Spirit works to bring about what God wants—-a world where human beings are friends of God, friends of one another, and friends of the universe that sustains us.”—–William A. Barry, S.J.

From the moment I saw the featured image of Pope Francis with the dove in St. Peter’s Square earlier in the week, I was reminded of why I can live in true Christian optimism with joy.  It is because Jesus defeated all evil and so can we and He promised His Father would send the Holy Spirit.    One of my toughest task is staying focused on the gift of awareness that Jesus is alive and at work in people’s lives—right now through the Holy Spirit in a world with so much pain and suffering.   Dwelling deep within each of us is the Holy Spirit….our Advocate and Counselor, whom the Father has sent in Jesus’ name,  that will teach us everything and remind us of all that Jesus has taught us.   Let’s speak to Jesus about our desire to take up the baton from His hand and complete the noble task He began while on earth.

Read, Reflect and Pray Scripture with any of the following passages:

Luke 4: 16-19                       The Spirit of the Lord is upon me….to proclaim the Good News….

John 16:  12-13                    The Spirit of truth will lead you to complete truth……

Acts 1: 6-8                              You will receive the power of the Spirit and be my witness……

Acts 2: 1-4                              The Pentecost experience……….

II Tim 1: 6-10                        God gave you the Spirit of power, love and self-control…….

John 14:15-16, 23B-26       I have told you this while I am with you.
The Advocate, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name,
will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.

In the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, Master Ignatius reminds us that  we believe that Christ our Lord has shared his Spirit with the Church in a lasting way.  The Spirit, then, is present in all the members of the church, and the same Spirit continues to influence and guide in a special way the leadership in the church for the good of all the members.  Although there may be matters of faith and morals which we as individuals at times cannot see or grasp, we should explore whether the Church may have given some official direction about it in order to aid us in our Christian living……there is always the danger of so stressing the importance of faith in God and God’s grace for our salvation that we ignore the necessity of our own daily effort in living lives of active love for our neighbor and for our world. Helps:

Lord my God when Your love spilled over into creation

You thought of me.

I am from Love, I am of Love, I am for Love

Let my heart, O God

always recognize, cherish, and enjoy

Your goodness in all of creation.

Direct all that is me toward Your PRAISE

TEACH me REVERENCE

for every person, all things.

ENERGIZE me in your service.

Lord God

let nothing ever distract me from Your love…

neither health nor sickness

wealth or poverty, honor nor dishonor

long life nor short life.

May I never seek nor choose to be other

than You intend or wish.  Amen.

Love, Bergan and Schwan

Thoughts to Ponder:

  • When I think of the Holy Spirit, I feel……….and I think………………………..
  • Are you aware of experiencing the Holy Spirit in your life?  How and when?…………………..
  • Are you able to live your life in true Christian optimism with joy?  Why or why not?………………..
  • How do you feel and what do you think when you hear that, by the fact that you are a Christian, you are called to evangelize, to spread the Good News?…………………………………………………
